Time Capsule
Our present
Moiliili Hongwanji temple was constructed in 1960 and we have been wondering
where the Time Capsule might have been "buried." It would be great if we
could uncover it for our Centennial celebration.
We don't know where it was exactly, but we found out that during the Elevator
project in 1993, the "older" Time Capsule was removed. Rev. Shigenori Makino was
the resident minister. Someone recalls that a newspaper featuring the new temple
opening and photos of the "chigo parade" were included.
Elevator construction photos at that time clearly revealed that there is space
behind the black marble Moiliili Hongwanji sign located at the bottom right hand
side of the temple steps and possibly a Time Capsule could be there. Alan Yokota
assisted in the search.
On February 21, 2006, a 3rd generation mason from Buzzy's Tile spent two hours
to remove the black marble sign. A few Hongwanji members gathered to witness and
to document the opening. The Moiliili Hongwanji preschool children also came out
to observe. At 11:30a.m. the marble tile was removed and a metal case about
3x18x24 was
revealed. Opening the case, a smaller package 3x16x20 wrapped in cardboard
and masking tape came out. This was dusted off and taken to the temple for
unveiling at the Sunday service. (note: The metal case was returned to the
site and Mr. Buzzy took two hours to replace the sign)
On February 26, after the 9:00a.m. Autumn Equinox and Rennyo Shonin Service, the
Time Capsule was officially opened by Ernie Morikubo chair of the Centennial
celebration with help by some youngsters.

At a later date a committee will decide if another Time Capsule will be placed
at Moiliili Hongwanji. Contents and site to be determined.
