MOILIILI HONGWANJI MISSION

“The White Way Radio Broadcast”  (revised 03/14/2006)

Moiliili Hongwanji's White Way Newsletter (March 1975) recorded the following:

"ENGLISH RADIO BROADCAST BEGINS

On April 5, 1975 at 7:35 A.M., Moiliili Hongwanji will begin its first weekly 15 minutes English radio program called the "WHITE WAY" over radio station KOHO.

This program follows immediately after the popular Japanese weekly program, the "Hongwanji Hour" presented by Betsuin which goes on the air at 7:15 a.m.

Significantly, April 5 marks 1,001 broadcast of the Hongwanji Hour and we would like to make our program also as meaningful as possible so that one day, we could also celebrate our 1,001 program.

Please tune to KOHO on Saturday mornings and make it truly your weekly Hongwanji Hour. (7:15-7:35 A.M. Japanese program; 7:35-7:50 A.M. English program)

Mr. Toshiyuki Hiranaga is the Broadcasting Committee Chairman with following committee members assisting him: Rev. Thomas Okano, Mr. Michio Morikubo, Miss Donna Higashi, Miss Ann Nakata, Mrs. Rose Nakamura, Mr. Toshimasa Tando, Mrs. Nancy Shiraki, Dr. Kanemi Kanazawa, and Mr. David Hunt."

The first five broadcasts were made on cassette tape but due to poor transmission, succeeding tapes were made on reel-to-reel tapes at the Hawaii Betsuin sound room.

These tapes were made available thanks to weekly sponsors, speakers and volunteer announcers and technicians.

When the third floor above the temple office was remodeled in 1983 to accommodate a new sound room, we began taping the White Way Radio broadcast tapes at Moiliili and continue till today.  On June 4, 1984 (#477 broadcast) the radio company requested us to change back to cassette tapes.

In early 1987, the program moved to KZOO radio station and was shortened to 13 minutes.

We could not continue this public service without the help of the many broadcast announcers and technicians.  We would like to recognize the past and present* volunteers: Jay Hamai, Keith Hamao*, Blayne Higa*, Kevin Kawamoto, Delma Kiyomoto, Germaine Kiyomoto-Isara*, Patrick Komo*, Ben Lewinger*, Megumi Makino, Minori Makino, Ernie Morikubo*, Noriyo Morikubo*, Susan Morishige*, Rose Nakamura, Ann Nakata, Wally Oda*, Ken Okimoto, Cyndi Osajima*, Erin Shimozono, Jeanie Shimozono, Ethel Shintaku*, Nancy Shiraki, Toshimasa Tando, Sharen Uyeunten*, Albert Yasukochi, and Donna Higashi*.  Also, all of our resident ministers and the office staff, notably Jeanne Watari, have been vital to the success of this on-going program.

With more than 1500 broadcast tapes in our sound room, it is the hope of the Moiliili Hongwanji Centennial Preservation Committee to digitize or convert them for better storage and easier accessibility.  The tapes will be in chronological order but later we hope to catalog the tapes by speakers, so you may request a copy.  If you wish to assist us in this huge project, please contact the temple office.

Presently each broadcast is sponsored by an individual or group at a cost of $65.  If you wish to be a sponsor please contact the temple office.  Again we would like to encourage the community to tune in each Saturday morning to station KZOO 1210 on the AM radio dial at 7:45 - 8:00 a.m.  As a side note, the longer-standing Honpa Hongwanji Hawaii Betsuin’s “Hongwanji Hour” precedes “The White Way” from 7:30 - 7:45 a.m. with a Dharma message in Japanese.
