Moiliili Hongwanji Choir

The Moiliili Hongwanji Choir was officially formed on February 14, 2005.  Under the direction of Edwin Tanaka and accompanist Francis Okano, it meets on Monday evenings from 7:30 - 9:00 p.m. at the temple annex.

We sing songs from our service gatha books as well as practice contemporary Japanese, English and Hawaiian songs.

We made our first official debut at the Gotane (Shinran Shonin’s birth) service on May 22, 2005 with the songs “Shinran Sama” and “Ondokusan.”  Generally we will perform at the temple’s major and/or special services.
(Note: MHM Centennial Service on March 26, 2006)

On August 6-7, 2005 MHM choir members participated in the Honpa Hongwanji's 2005 Choralfest with other choir members throughout the state.  A 100 member choral workshop was lead by Ms. Nola Nahulu culminating in a mass choir presentation at a special music service at the Hawaii Betsuin.  We sang the following four songs:  "Golden Chain, Juseige, A Message to the Sun, and The Law of Change."  Special thanks to Francis Okano, chair of the music committee and Rev. Irene Nakamoto, advisor.  It was a weekend well spent.
