Gotan-e (Birth of Shinran Shonin) Service celebrates the birth of Shinran Shonin, founder of Jodo Shin Buddhism, who was born on May 21, 1173.

Statue of Shinran Shonin outside of Moiliili Hongwanji Buddhist Temple

The inscription on the statue of Shinran Shonin outside of our temple reads in part:

Shinran was the founder of Jodo Shinsu Buddhism (Hongwanji). He was born at the close of the Heian period, when political power was passing from the emperor into the hands of the warrior clans. It was during this era that Japanese buddhism, which had been declining into formalism for several centuries, underwent intense renewal.

He developed a doctrine that reveals the one unobstructed way through which we can receive salvation and Buddhahood. This teaching lights our way and guides our footsteps through life. The statue depicts Shinran in missionary robes as he appeared throughout his life propagating the teachings.

The Moiliili Hongwanji Preschool PTO will be having a breakfast fundraiser after the service. Donations will be accepted.

Everyone is welcome!
